drop box \’dräp bäks\ n.
a warm bin, lodged in a wall, that allows mothers to deposit their children without being seen.
Psalm 68:5 Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation.
We went to a church today that was off of the base. It took us about 15-20minutes to walk there. It was the English speaking service and very basic and simple, significantly smaller compared to what we are used to back home. Today there was a guest speaker, Pastor Lee Jong-rak. He spoke, through an interpreter (first time experience with that in a church), about his ministry "The Drop Box."
It was explained that in the earlier 2000s the government here created a new law that required birth mothers to register their new born babies on their family tree. This law was identified as countercultural because it required these women/girls, whether or not they wanted the child, to associate themselves with him/her on legal record. When this happened there became a significant increase in abortions and infant mortality across the country, with people literally leaving babies for dead in the streets. The mother's were desperate and did not want to have to associate themselves if it were a child that they were not planning to keep, but this law required the relationship go on record. Pastor Lee Jong-rak created the Drop Box as a result of the negative outcome of this law.
James 1:27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
The drop box is a place that women/girls who do not want their babies and want no questions asked are able to leave their child. This prevents abortions and fatal abandonment. It was stated that to date there have been 827 babies placed in the box since it was created. Additionally there have been 140 parents reunited with their babies after giving them up; it was my understanding that this was after they were able to get themselves together enough to be able to take care of a child.
Isaiah 1:17 learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause.

Update 1/7/16 I have since learned that children who do not have a birth parent registered are not able to be adopted :-(
